Genesis
Passageway was created because modern sync services try to extract recurring payments from you for storage once you reach their storage limits, and you still don't know where your data is located or what it's being used for. DONTEC aims to put the power back in the hands of the user. Alternatives for self-hosting cloud services were complex and required port forwarding, reverse-proxies, and advanced networking skills that most don't have. That's a problem.
Purpose
Passageway pairs with your favorite synchronization service to turn your whole hard drive into your personal cloud storage without port forwarding, complex networking, or a recurring payment.
Limitations of Current Practices
Commercial cloud storage:
Space-limited
Subscription-based storage upgrades
Your data primarily resides on an external agency's server
Likely harvesting your data for advertisements
Loss of access to their service means loss of access to your data
Modern self-hosted solutions:
Require port forwarding and/or other advanced networking skills
Frustrating to establish
Complex
Difficult to troubleshoot
Passageway's Approach
Use your whole hard drive for storage accessible online
Upgrade your storage at your own discretion without paying fees
Keep your data on your machine
You choose where the data primarily resides, and you can gain physical access in the event of a network outage
You're not dependent on any commercial company for your data to survive
No complex networking skills required
The entire cloud server can be established and configured in less than 5 minutes
You choose how much of your data is exposed to external services
Store any files you have
Can be paired with your synchronization service of choice for capabilities such as web page generation
Flexibility
The flexibility of use allows interesting implementations.
Data Access Box (DAB): a physical bridge to your cloud network without needing to configure additional machines. DABs are client devices connected to your Passageway server that can be attached to another computer in order to grant them access to the Passageway server without needing any software installation. To create a DAB, set up Passageway on an Android device. When you plug that device into a desktop or laptop, it is able to upload and download files to your Passageway server over USB through the DAB as a relay. This allows adhoc access to the network on machines you come across. You can also distribute DABs to grant users access to your server without giving them credentials or requiring them to configure connections or software.
You're limited only by your creativity.
Limitations
Passageway requires a synchronization service to operate, and comes with Syncthing
Does not provide file access via web, but you can easily replace Syncthing with a commercial cloud service to gain this capability
Purchase of this version grants you a lifetime license to use the then-current software at the time of purchase. This is a one-time purchase. Future versions and access to their increased capabilities would require a new purchase. In this way, users are not locked into a subscription-based service, but the developers' continued work on the project can still be compensated if, and only if, users want to benefit from it.
